How do I know if this part needs replacingFirstly, you can check by looking at the pads through the wheel rims. You will notice that the outside pad will be pressed up against the rotor which is the large metal disc. You should have approximately 6 mm of pad and if you have less you should inspect and or replace the pads on both left and right side of your vehicle. Some vehicles have brake pad wear indicators that will give you a warning light to 'warn' that the pads need changing. Some brand of pads will let off a high pitch screech when the brakes are applied which can also be a warning that your brake pads need changing. Other signs are unusual increased braking distance, pulling to the left or the right or a loud grinding noise which is an indication that the pads have worn beyond replacement and the noise is metal on metal. You have most likely damaged the rotor/s which may need to be skimmed or replaced.
